State Institute for Administrative Careers, Mumbai / SIAC

A quick review of SIAC, Mumbai. State Institute for Administrative Careers or SIAC is the only well known UPSC coaching option in Mumbai.

Positives:
1) good library. any book that isn't available too is made available for students fairly quick
2) well lit reading hall
3) Group Discussions. the only and biggest advantage SIAC has to offer is that it connects you with other aspirants. it is upto you to identify the serious aspirants whom  you want to talk to or keep in touch with. For example, there is a 6pm daily news reading/group discussion session which goes on. This is a student-driven model. (ie, institute plays no role. ) anybody can join that.
4) stipend - whenever it is paid ! (lot of problems in this.)
5) good access to Delhi's resources. you can get access to most of the materials, books, test series, question papers, MAGAZINES, etc which you get in delhi right here in Mumbai. generally not available anywhere else in mumbai. but you get these at SIAC. by resources i mean people as well. the students who come there too.
6) networking with good students. many who come there are sincere or bright. (though there are the non serious as well. but less compared to delhi, in my opinion.) it is possible for you to get a healthy competitive network, if you want. (i prefer to read alone)

Negatives:
1) premises and facilities are not very well maintained. dusty. sometimes the place really needs very good cleaning.
2) Irregular lectures. History and Maths (for the prelims batch) teachers are good, rest are okay or bad. History by Bhushan Deshmukh sir is excellent though - better than Delhi. But please note that SIAC isn't really about the coaching. It's about the support system that it tries to provide students. More of an enabler role.
3) We're trying to request classes for mains! yet to start.
4) stipends are very very very late. Right now nearly 5 months' stipend is due. Do not depend or plan anything based on the stipends!

Conclusions :
SIAC is not much about the coaching or coaching quality. What it manages is to give you access to a variety of UPSC-related things, (which you otherwise will never get in Mumbai). It is more of a voluntary group study model or networking opportunity if you are looking for one. I prefer to use it for the reading hall and library facilities.

I have already posted the SIAC entrance question paper here
Here is their result declaration link

  1. I too am a mech engg graduate and was thinking of joining SIAC for my preparations of 2013 attempt.
first of all thank you for the review as there as 'absolutely no' info about the institute anywhere.

for me the reason for joining a coaching is to be among serious aspirants of 2013.im not really looking to be tought.and secondly i want a good library and reading room .according to ur review both my criteria seem fulfilled.
but my doubt still remains as u say it is a student driven model. so do u think it will sustain in the next year as well? also i'll b preparing in english,in that aspect will i find similar students and reading material??

    thanking u in anticipation

  2. books are in english. marathi also can be made available thru networks and i think some books in the library are available in marathi.. not sure.
good point, i will update the marathi-factor in the blog shortly..
what did you not get about the student-driven model?

  3. Students are mostly Marathi speakers, though there are a handful of non-Marathi speaking students as well.(including myself. and I do not find this a big bother.) Lecturers talk in english. They may switch to marathi occasionally. Manageable factor.
Your second question - Beyond a point, i would warn you against this group-study thing. It is quite misleading, in my opinion. After you gather the initial required information to start off, better to shut yourself up and study alone - it is the most reliable. Self-training is safer. Reason : group studying involves the risk of slowing you down (so as to be inclusive), which is a fair thing, but a potential time waster as well. and you might never realise the session is not being useful enough. But for slower ones, or complete/blank beginners, yes it might be good

  4. i visited SIAC yesterday. I liked the atmosphere there.it very much suited my demands. as for my question bout student driven model...what i meant was do you think the next batch students will continue the style of study as ur batch students are doing?? (which means did the batch before you did the same as you r doing right now.) coz my motive of joining SIAC will be to be among serious candidates for 2013 and access to good reading material. if this is not going to happen theres no point coming to SIAC.

im saying this coz im from pune.hope you get what i meant to ask.

    thanks again.
